tHE kASILOF rIVER- My favorite Kenai Peninsula River
The Kasilof River isn’t as well known as the world-famous Kenai River but that is what makes it so special. It’s truly the hidden but not so hidden gem of the Kenai Peninsula. Just a short drive from Soldotna, the Kasilof River offers phenomenal fishing and a completely different experience than the Kenai River. Floating in a drift boat thru this glacial river is a must do experience while visiting the Kenai Peninsula.
Not only is the Kasilof beautiful and abundant with wildlife, but the fishing can also be incredible.
Starting in late May the Kasilof River gets a return of both Wild and Hatchery King Salmon. With recent declines of King Salmon in Alaska, the Kasilof River has remained on of the few places left to target and harvest King Salmon in the river.
Kasilof King Samon are incredible table fare and an absolute blast to fight on rod and reel. There is nothing quite like watching a rod erupt from a vicious take down and battling a chrome bright King Salmon fresh from the salt water. The icing on the cake is getting the chance to take that Kasilof King Salmon home to the smoker or BBQ!
The Kasilof River provides great Sockeye Salmon fishing in late June thru the end of July. The Sockeye Salmon arrive at the Kasilof River earlier than the Kenai River. In the last decade the Kasilof River Sockeye Salmon runs have been incredible. Fishing for Sockeye Salmon on the Kasilof River has been unbelievable due to these continued great returns. To be able to have such great fishing, wildlife and the experience of boating down rapids surrounded by raw beauty are the reasons why the Kasilof River is without a doubt my favorite fishing destination on the Kenai Peninsula.
