Memoirs of an Alaskan fishing guide. Rule #1 Learn to appreciate the grind.

March 22, 2023

Days are getting longer; the snow and ice is starting to melt. Soon we will forget about the long, cold, dark days of winter as we embrace what seems to be a never-ending ball of warm light in the sky.  Moose will calve out, bears will come out of hibernation, rivers will break up and millions of fish with start their journey home and some their journey to the ocean. That can only mean one thing, fishing season is almost here.  After my first winter in Alaska, I can say that I have never been more excited for fishing season.  Each season brings on new challenges and it seems like we are always adapting to ever changing river conditions, regulations and fishing techniques.  I used to be somewhat frustrated with this constantly daunting and complex puzzle but after over a decade and half in the game I have come to appreciate the grind.  All the trials and tribulations of the pursuit make the successes sweet and worthwhile causes.

I am very lucky to be able to do what I love for a living. Yes, sometimes in rains, fish don’t bite, rivers are crowded, fishing seasons close but the good days far outnumber the bad.  There is no substitute for being on the water or in the woods for me.  It is my nirvana, my paradise, my utopia and it allows me to marvel at this creation and share my passion for it with others.  I know this will be a challenging year as is every year.  I’m so ready for the grind, for 3 am wake ups and long days on the water rain or shine, fish or not.  I am a fishing guide, and this is what I do, I’m not sure I could ever go back to a real job now.  I’m forever grateful for that college professor that allowed my fishing guide job to qualify for my summer internship, who knows where I would be if he denied my request.

See you all on the water.

Tight lines,

Greg Springer
